    July 8-12, 2017 - New Jersey State Museum - Trenton, NJ
  • Each workshop will feature hands-on activities, and include practice specimens and product samples to take back to your lab.
  • A copy of Bone Histology of Fossil Tetrapods will be raffled off in both sessions.
  • Discuss solutions to technical challenges with colleagues from around the world.
  • Each workshop limited to 16 participants.

In 2011, the Institut Català de Paleontologia organized the First International Symposium on Paleohistology (ISPH).
The goal of this meeting was to establish a biennial symposium to address the need for an international paleohistology forum where researchers could exchange ideas, approaches, and methodologies concerned with vertebrate hard tissue biology.

Starting with a specimen and ending with a thin-section slide, we will examine each step of the process as described in Bone Histology of Fossil Tetrapods (Padian & Lamm 2013):

Advanced Histology Techniques for Fossils, and Modern Bone Basics.
  • Adaptations of methods for very small and very large fossils will be described.
  • Techniques for sectioning and staining of non-decalcified modern bone will be demonstrated.
  • The fossil restoration process will be reviewed.
  • Bring your questions or specimen examples for troubleshooting!
